Google Maps renders the world as a flat map using the Mercator projection, a centuries-old technique that preserves angles and shapes but distorts size the further you get from the equator. It's why Greenland looks roughly the same size as Africa on a standard Mercator map, when in reality Africa is more than ten times larger.
Google Earth avoids this entirely because it renders an actual sphere. Countries and landmasses show up at their true relative size, with no projection distortion.
For everyday navigation, the distortion doesn't matter — Mercator is actually ideal for driving directions because it preserves straight-line bearings.
